What is UVGI?
Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is a method of using short-wavelength ultraviolet light (usually UV-C) to kill or deactivate microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and mold.
How it works
UV-C light damages the DNA or RNA of microbes so they can’t reproduce or infect.
Common uses
- HVAC systems in Homes – sanitizing air coils and airflow in buildings
- Hospitals – disinfecting rooms and equipment
- Water treatment – purifying drinking water
- Labs / clean rooms – contamination control
- Home air purifiers – some units include UVGI chambers
Important notes
- UVGI works best when light directly reaches the target surface/air stream. Dust or shadows reduce effectiveness.
- Standard UV-C can harm skin and eyes, so it must be shielded or used in controlled systems.
- It supplements cleaning/filtration—it doesn’t replace them.
Many homeowners and businesses install UVGI inside furnaces/air handlers to reduce mold growth on evaporator coils and improve indoor air quality.
