What is UVGI?

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is a method of using short-wavelength ultraviolet light (usually UV-C) to kill or deactivate microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and mold.

How it works

UV-C light damages the DNA or RNA of microbes so they can’t reproduce or infect.

Common uses

  • HVAC systems in Homes – sanitizing air coils and airflow in buildings
  • Hospitals – disinfecting rooms and equipment
  • Water treatment – purifying drinking water
  • Labs / clean rooms – contamination control
  • Home air purifiers – some units include UVGI chambers

Important notes

  • UVGI works best when light directly reaches the target surface/air stream. Dust or shadows reduce effectiveness.
  • Standard UV-C can harm skin and eyes, so it must be shielded or used in controlled systems.
  • It supplements cleaning/filtration—it doesn’t replace them.

Many homeowners and businesses install UVGI inside furnaces/air handlers to reduce mold growth on evaporator coils and improve indoor air quality.
